Discourse
Zoé Ishee combines art and science
Discourse was an exhibition that I planned and executed during the tail end of summer in 2024. At the time, I was working both at the Mississippi Entomology Museum as their Graphic Designer, as well as under Dr. Matt Brown, illustrating protists and doing science for the Brown Lab.Discourse is a playful awareness of the 'Conversation' we all consistently contribute to with our existence—our narrative-seeking brains, our questions, and our answers. It's a lighthearted take on the bigger, more “serious” dialogue. It was a place to share a bit of my strange mind for science, incorporating my fervent awareness and understanding of anatomy, among other things. I make these in strange places at strange times and whenever it feels right, and sometimes when it feels really wrong. My friends say that conversation is a favorable pastime of mine because it is my tool for exploring the big world.
About 11 hours were spent both alone and with friends hanging the works. The original works are mostly large. Around 19x30inches on sketch archival paper. The exhibition featured prints of the works. The exhibition featured two installments that have been concluded in the Union Gallery at Mississippi State University as well as the inaugural exhibition at SAAC. Thank you for celebrating this little piece of the much larger, more existential, palaver pie with me. Very grateful to my dear friend, Tristan, for providing euphony during the respective receptions (live music of his original composition). I had an interesting time, as per usual, exercising my creativity live. (Live painting.)
