I've been fascinated by the brain my entire life, and my first experience encountering real deal neuroscience in a lab was seeing one of these EEG caps. When I was younger, I was considering somehow buying one of those control-the-ball with your mind games just to get close to something like EEG. I was excited to have finally found myself in places where there were items that actually interacted with the brain when I joined my first lab. It was the initial step into a world in which I would encounter more machine-brain interfaces. >:)
Here's the first page in the new-project book. I have alot of interests that are usually directed towards my friends, but I recieved a LOT of likes when I posted some science, so, why not share more science? We are a deeply curious species and I love to enjoy our wonder with others.
Ok, so back to EEG. I was trained by Emma
You might've seen EEG being used in other ways, too. They're very useful in a medical setting to detect abnormalities, such as seizure activity.
Something I didn't touch on in this drawing was how the EEG relies on synchronized firing in neurons. A single neuron is too weak to detect from the outside. But when thousands of neurons fire together in sync (like clapping in unison), their electrical fields can be detected. This is why EEG is best at detecting big groups of neurons firing at the same rhythm, and why things like alpha waves (relaxed, eyes closed) or ERPs show up so clearly.
Some examples of EEG readings and their meanings:
N400:
A negative wave around 400 ms, linked to language and meaning.
Like, you read: “I take my coffee with cream and… socks.”
The weird ending triggers an N400 ERP because it doesn’t fit the meaning.
Error-Related Negativity
A quick negative wave right after you make a mistake. Maybe if you're doing a speeded button-press task, and you press the wrong one, your brain shows an ERN before you even realize it.
I made all of the elements here, even the fonts! I made a special font for this new thing...Except for the Karen looking one (as in Plankton's wife). That one's called Computer Says No, to be clear.
Lastly, thank you to everyone who has submitted something
